Saju vs Western Astrology: How the Two Birth Charts Differ
saju vs western astrology · Education
If you already know your sun sign, saju can look familiar at first: you enter a birthday and get a chart. Underneath, the two systems are built in different ways. Western astrology maps where the Sun, Moon and planets were in the sky when you were born. Saju turns your birth year, month, day and hour into calendar symbols, the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. This guide compares them side by side, so you know what each chart is made of and why the two do not translate into each other.
New to saju? What Is Saju?, our beginner's introduction, covers the basics in a few minutes.
The short version
| Saju (Korean four pillars) | Western astrology | |
|---|---|---|
| What the chart is built from | Calendar cycles: stems and branches for year, month, day and hour | Positions of the Sun, Moon and planets |
| Main units | Four pillars, eight characters | Twelve signs, twelve houses, aspects between planets |
| Usual reference point for "you" | Day Master, the stem of the day pillar | Often the Sun sign, with the Moon and rising sign |
| Elements | Wood, fire, earth, metal, water | Fire, earth, air, water |
| Birthplace needed? | Not by the basic method | Yes, for the rising sign and houses |
| Where the year starts | Ipchun, the start of spring, in early February | No year boundary; signs follow the Sun through the year |
Inputs: what each chart needs from you
A Western natal chart needs your date, time and place of birth. The place matters because the rising sign and the twelve houses depend on where the horizon was at that moment. Without a time, an astrologer can still place the Sun and most planets by sign, but not the houses.
A saju chart needs your date and, ideally, your time. The basic method does not use birthplace at all. Some practitioners adjust the clock time for longitude or true solar time, and that is a difference in method between schools. The PillarAtlas calculator uses the local clock time you enter, without time-zone or true-solar-time correction, and the day changes at midnight. If your time is unknown, the hour pillar stays open and the other three pillars are unaffected.
Building blocks: planets vs calendar symbols
Western astrology works with ten bodies (the Sun, the Moon and eight planets), the twelve signs they sit in, the twelve houses and the angles between them.
Saju has no planets in its chart. It works with:
- ten Heavenly Stems, the upper character of each pillar;
- twelve Earthly Branches, the lower character, which double as the familiar zodiac animals;
- the five elements, which every stem and branch carries;
- yin and yang polarity.
Four pillars of two characters each give the eight characters that the Chinese name BaZi refers to.
The "you" in the chart: Sun sign vs Day Master
Pop astrology often reduces a person to one label, the Sun sign, set by roughly which month you were born in. Saju has its own one-label shortcut, the year animal, but serious reading starts somewhere else: the Day Master, the stem of your day pillar. Because the day pillar moves through a sixty-day cycle, people born in the same month, and even the same week, usually have different Day Masters. How to Find Your Day Master shows where to find yours.
Here is how much the two systems can diverge. Two made-up births at 12:00, one on 3 February 2024 and one on 10 February 2024, are both Aquarius by Sun sign. In saju they share almost nothing:
| Birth (12:00) | Sun sign | Year pillar | Month pillar | Day pillar | Day Master |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
The first birth falls before Ipchun, so in saju it still belongs to the Rabbit year, even though it is 2024 on the calendar. Korean Zodiac Animals and Saju: Why Your Chart Year Can Differ explains that boundary.
Elements: five phases vs four elements
Both systems talk about elements, but they are not the same set and they do not map onto each other. Western astrology has four elements: fire, earth, air and water, each shared by three signs. Saju has five: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Wood and metal have no Western counterpart, and air has no saju counterpart.
The saju elements are better understood as phases in a cycle than as substances. Each one feeds one element and restrains another, and readers describe a chart through those relationships rather than by counting a single dominant element. Five Elements in Saju: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water Explained walks through both cycles.
The one place they meet: the Sun's path
Saju does use the Sun, indirectly. Its months are set by the solar terms, points on the Sun's yearly path spaced fifteen degrees apart. A saju month begins at every second solar term, so each month is thirty degrees of the Sun's path, the same width as a Western sign. The boundaries sit about halfway through each sign: the Tiger month starts at Ipchun, around 4 February, while Aquarius runs from roughly 20 January to 18 February. So both systems follow the same Sun but slice its path in different places, which is why a saju month and a Sun sign rarely line up.
Timing: two different ideas of "later"
A natal chart in either system is fixed at birth. Each tradition then has its own way of talking about time. Western astrologers compare the birth chart with the current positions of the planets. Saju readers lay further stem–branch pairs over the birth chart, including ten-year cycles. These are separate techniques built on top of the birth chart; the free PillarAtlas chart shows the four birth pillars only.
Which one should you use?
They answer the same curiosity in different languages, so there is no need to choose one for life. Some practical differences:
- If you do not know your birthplace or time, a saju chart is still usable from the date alone; a Western chart loses its houses and rising sign.
- If you want a single label to start from, the Day Master is more individual than a Sun sign, because it changes every day rather than every month.
- If you already read Western charts, expect to unlearn the planets. Saju vocabulary is about how calendar symbols relate to one another.
Neither system has scientific support as a predictor of personality or events. Both are best used as frameworks for reflection.
