BaZi Day Master: How to Find Yours on a Saju Chart
bazi day master · Education
Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem in the day pillar of your four-pillar chart, called saju in Korean and BaZi in Chinese. To find it: generate a four-pillar chart from your birth date, look at the day column, and read the upper symbol. That is it. Everything else on the chart is usually read in relation to that one label.
Do it now (free, no account): Open the PillarAtlas Saju calculator, enter a birth date, then keep the result on screen while you read.
What the Day Master is
A saju or BaZi chart has four pillars: year, month, day and hour. Each pillar is a pair, a Heavenly Stem on top and an Earthly Branch below. Many teaching traditions treat the day stem as the chart's reference point, the "self" label that other symbols are compared against. That reference point is called the Day Master. It is a convention for reading, not a personality verdict.
If the vocabulary is new, read Saju Meaning: How to Read the Labels on Your Chart first; this article assumes you know what a stem and a branch are.
Day Master in BaZi vs saju: same idea, different word
"BaZi" (eight characters) and "saju" (four pillars) name the same chart family: four pillars, eight characters. If a BaZi chart or a BaZi guide talks about the Day Master, it means the same day stem you will find on a saju chart. Results can still differ between tools when they use different rules for the day change or solar time; see the edge cases below.
Step by step on PillarAtlas
- Open the calculator: go to the Saju calculator.
- Enter the birth date (solar by default; switch to lunar only if the date you have is a lunar date).
- Enter birth time if you know it, or choose unknown. The Day Master does not depend on the hour; only the hour pillar does.
- Press the generate button. You get the pillar columns of your free chart.
- Find the day column. Read the top symbol. That stem is your Day Master.
- Write it down together with its element label, if shown. You will reuse it in every later guide.
Two edge cases that change the answer
Births near midnight. The calculator uses the local civil time you enter, and the day changes at midnight (this is stated on the calculator page). Some traditional BaZi and saju schools start the new day at 23:00 instead. If you were born between 23:00 and 00:00, your Day Master can differ between schools. Our tool follows the midnight rule; note that assumption instead of switching tools until you get an answer you like.
Time zone and true solar time. The calculator does not apply time-zone or true-solar-time correction. If you were born abroad, enter the local clock time at the place of birth. For most births this does not move the day pillar at all; it matters only close to midnight.
What the Day Master is not
- Not a zodiac sun sign. It comes from the day, not the year.
- Not a prediction. It is the label other symbols are read against.
- Not complete on its own. Readers look at it alongside the month pillar and the overall balance of the chart.
- Not affected by an unknown birth time. You lose the hour pillar, not the Day Master.
A 5-minute practice loop
- Run your own chart and circle the day stem.
- Run a friend's or a fictional date (only use data you are allowed to use).
- Compare the two day stems: same or different?
- Change only the birth time and re-run. The day stem stays the same unless you cross midnight.
- Go back to What Is Saju? if any column still feels unclear.
