Saju Compatibility: What Gunghap Compares (and What It Doesn't)

saju compatibility · Education

Saju compatibility is the two-chart reading traditionally called gunghap (궁합) in Korean practice: you place one person's four pillars next to another's and ask how the charts relate. That is a different job from reading a single chart alone. A solo reading asks what your stems, branches and Day Master look like. A compatibility reading asks what happens when two full charts sit side by side—with both people's consent, and without turning either chart into a guaranteed fate score.

Primary path on this site: the Match / Twin Atlas flow is the two-person compatibility entry on PillarAtlas. This guide explains the idea; Match is where you start a two-chart session when you are ready. Understanding the concept does not require a cart or billing step.

If you still need the basics of what a chart is, start with What Is Saju? and Saju Reading. For how Korean fortune categories place gunghap next to saju, see Korean Fortune Telling.

Solo chart versus two-chart compatibility

A solo saju reading uses one birth date (and ideally birth time) to build four pillars. You study that one grid—Day Master, elements, pillar roles, and in-chart branch structure. The Four Pillars of Saju and How to Find Your Day Master stay inside that solo frame.

Gunghap / saju compatibility needs two charts. Readers compare Day Masters across stems, elemental lean when both grids are in view, and branch patterns that appear between people rather than only inside one chart. The output is traditionally framed as relationship tendencies—not as a substitute for how the two people communicate.

On PillarAtlas, keep the product doors separate:

  • Love (Love reading flow) is a solo relationship-theme path: one chart, relationship-flavoured chapters.
  • Match (Match / Twin Atlas) is the two-person compatibility path: two charts on purpose.

Do not treat Love as a shortcut for gunghap. Do not treat a solo clash note as a verdict about a named partner.

Consent and birth data

A two-chart reading only makes sense when both people agree to share birth data. Entering someone else's date without permission is a consent problem. If either hour is unknown, say so: missing hour pillars limit what careful readers claim about that column, just as on a solo chart.

Before you open Match: both people know a two-chart session is happening; you have the best available dates (and times, if known); and you treat the result as educational framing—not a binding stay-or-leave decision.

What is typically compared (high level)

Different schools weight different layers. At a literacy level—without promising a numeric "compatibility score" or a life outcome—readers often look at:

Day Masters across two charts

Each person has a Day Master (the Heavenly Stem of the day pillar). Compatibility talk often asks how those two stems relate in five-element or ten-god vocabulary—supportive, draining, controlling, and so on. That is a relationship between two stems, not a moral ranking. Learn the solo Day Master first via How to Find Your Day Master.

Elemental balance side by side

Each chart already has a Wood / Fire / Earth / Metal / Water mix. Side by side, readers ask whether one chart leans where the other is thin, or whether both lean the same way in season language. These are balance observations, not proof a relationship will succeed or fail.

Branch patterns across people

Earthly Branch clash, combine and related pairs can appear between two people's pillars as well as inside one chart. Saju Branch Relationships teaches clash and combine inside one chart only and is explicitly not gunghap. Across two charts the catalogues may look familiar, but the question changes from "what structure sits on my pillars?" to "what pairs show up between us?" Keep those jobs distinct.

Pillar roles that tradition watches in couples

Classical teaching often watches the day-branch position (spouse-palace language in many handbooks) and how each day pillar meets the other's pillars. Treat those as traditional starting points, not courtroom evidence. None of the layers above requires inventing a single score; a lone percentage with no method is marketing shorthand, not classical certainty.

Boundaries: what compatibility does not replace

  • Not a substitute for communication. A chart comparison cannot apologise, negotiate chores, or set boundaries for you.
  • Not medical, legal or financial advice. Relationship decisions that need professionals stay with professionals.
  • Not a fate lock. Traditional labels are starting points for reflection. Two charts that look "difficult" on paper do not obligate anyone to leave; two charts that look "easy" do not guarantee kindness.
  • Not the same as animal-year folk lists. Zodiac-animal "who gets along" tables are popular shorthand and are not a full two-chart method.

Saju Reading remains the boundary guide for what any reading—solo or two-person—should refuse to guarantee. Free Saju Reading clarifies what the free surface shows for a single chart before you open a two-person flow.

What this page will not do

  • No money talk in this article. Compatibility literacy does not need amounts or cart language here.
  • No year-luck / annual-fortune product. This page does not cover yearly luck chapters or link to a year theme.
  • No fake UI walkthrough. We point to the Match URL; we do not invent screenshots or guarantee every client-rendered label.
  • No destiny-unlock sales framing. Use Match as a two-chart session, not as a guaranteed billing story.
  • No rewrite of older LIVE copy here. Some older guide sentences may still say two-person tools are unavailable until a later backlink/copy pass; this article is the educational home for the Match-era explanation.

Next step

  1. Map each person's solo chart with the Saju calculator if you want the free four pillars in hand first.
  2. Confirm consent and birth data for both people.
  3. Open the Match / Twin Atlas flow when you are ready for a two-chart session on this site.
  4. Keep clash/combine literacy for one chart on Saju Branch Relationships so you do not mix solo structure with gunghap.
